Business history

Transmission and distribution (T&D) connect electricity generation to the people and industries that use it. GE’s electrical heritage includes equipment for transmitting, distributing, controlling and protecting electricity; T&D describes a business family, not one unchanged legal entity throughout GE’s history.

On December 11, 2002, GE Industrial Systems announced a worldwide supply agreement with ChevronTexaco covering electrical transmission and distribution equipment, including switchgear and transformers. This is evidence of an established business, not its founding date.

By 2004, GE Energy explicitly listed transmission and distribution among its industries. On June 25, 2004, it announced a contract for two 500 kV series-compensation systems for China Southern Power Grid. The systems combined capacitors with digital protection and control to increase transmission capacity—documenting GE’s grid work before the later Alstom acquisition.

GE completed its acquisition of Alstom’s power and grid businesses on November 2, 2015—not Alstom as a whole. On November 9, GE announced that GE Digital Energy and Alstom Grid had combined to form Grid Solutions, initially a GE–Alstom joint venture. The combined portfolio brought together distinct GE and Alstom technology histories.

The ownership paths must be kept separate: ABB acquired GE Industrial Solutions, an electrical-distribution and industrial-equipment business, on June 30, 2018. That sale was not the sale of all GE transmission-and-distribution activities or GE Grid Solutions.

GE Vernova became an independent public company on April 2, 2024. The grid-business lineage now belongs to GE Vernova, not GE Aerospace; the historical GE T&D name should not be read as the name of a current aerospace division.

India’s listed company has a separate legal history. GE T&D India Limited was formerly ALSTOM T&D India Limited and became GE Vernova T&D India Limited on October 16, 2024. These Indian company names and dates are not the founding history of GE’s worldwide T&D business.
