01

Business history

GE Rail Services leased railcars and ran railcar-repair facilities, serving freight railroads and shippers alongside—but separately from—GE Transportation’s locomotive manufacturing.

On September 30, 2015, GE sold its tank-car fleet to Marmon Holdings and announced separate agreements to sell its railcar-repair facilities to Marmon and the remaining GE Railcar Services leasing business to Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo’s railcar-leasing acquisition closed on January 1, 2016. This was a set of transactions with different buyers and closing dates, not a single sale of the whole business to one company.
