01
Business history
Utah International, a mining company with coal operations in Queensland, Australia and mineral interests in the Americas, merged into General Electric in December 1976 in a share exchange valued at about $2.17 billion—then the largest merger in US history.
GE agreed in January 1983 to sell the Utah group to Australia’s Broken Hill Proprietary (BHP) for about $2.4 billion while retaining Ladd Petroleum and some US energy assets. BHP completed the acquisition on April 3, 1984; BHP describes the deal as turning it into a worldwide minerals company.
